Refugees in Piemonte (Italy): hospitality-reception, counselling, training courses for immigrants, so as render self sufficiency for a peaceful and assertive coexistance and respect for human dignity

The project began immediately after the conclusion of the project co financed by OPM, that concluded in December 2010.After having witnessed positive outcomes from the HOSPITALITY , COUNSELLING AND THE TRAINING COURSES,IT WAS DECIDED TO CONTINUE THE PROGRAMME.

WE WISH TO POINT OUT THAT, IN LIGHT OF the EVENTS that occurred in year 2011(Arab spring revolution)there has been a considerable increment in flux of both illegal and legal immigrants, among which a considerable number has been relocated to Piemonte, specifically in Turin.

Particularly they worked in Libya country characterized by a scares native population and in need of manpower, many African immigrants, among which a considerable number of Somalis, Eritreans and Sudanese, many of whom on arriving in Italy have been transferred to the metropolitan areas of Turin, practically increasing the number of people in contact with the association and the services that it provides, in one way or another, though in different times, we have managed to integrate them into our literacy ,counseling ,assistance and training programmes that are co financed by OPM.

The new beneficiaries have already been integrated into the programmes, thanks to the agreement stipulated by our association and the food bank, moreover we have assisted those families that offered hospitality to the newcomers with food, constituting bases for a new programme that we are going to present to OPM for possible financing.

We wish to underline some important information that cropped up during the programme:

  • The new citizens that benefits from the literacy courses aimed at job formation and rights at workplace, and generally from various training courses, have increased considerably due to refugees that were relocated into the city of Turin
  • It is mainly for this reason that the programme has favoured the choice of responding to each and everyone's necessities, relying upon personnel chosen among the refugees who are well versed in both Italian and somali languages as translators and at the same time facilitating their integration into the society, and on certain occasion paying a small amount to the translators;
  • Due to the emergence situation of refugees, particularly Somalis and Sudanese and to a small extend Tunisians; we decided to allocate part of our budget to the immediate needs especially health assistance due to longtime taken by government authorities to help;
  • In addition due inadequate resources allocated to refugees and in some cases to their families, it was therefore decided to cater food during training courses, also to favour moments where people can gather ,all this being possible due to expenses allocated to job formation.
