The project

In Hargeisa, in Somaliland, a region in the north of Somalia, the Mohamed Aden Sheikh Teaching Hospital is under construction. These hospital facilities will provide free, high quality healthcare to the Somali population.

Building peace with a” free hospital for all” in Hargeisa was the dream of our Association’s founder, Dr. Mohamed Aden Sheikh, Minister of Health and Culture in Somalia, who later became a prominent member of the city of Torino as well.

The region of Somaliland is considered a place of safety by the many victims of the civil war, which has wrecked havoc on the country for a long time, especially in the south.

The construction of the Mohamed Aden Sheikh Teaching Hospital is also seen as a way to reward the peace and stability which has reigned in this area for twenty years.

The Mohamed Aden Sheikh Teaching Hospital, conceived of as an eco-sustainable modular facility, will offer units and services to progressively supplement the already existing adjacent hospital.

The first stage of the project will be the creation of a paediatric unit, equipped with a kitchen, canteen, laboratory, pharmacy, disease isolation unit, and guestrooms. The unit will be developed over 1800 sq. m and provide 34 beds (about 1550 sq. m) as well as a malnutrition treatment centre, financed by our partner, NutriAid (another 252 sq. m).

The Mohamed Aden Sheikh Teaching Hospital there will also be equipped with a multimedia room for teaching and training local personnel and for teleconsultancy: an international team of health professionals, in fact, will support local personnel in order to create an ever more autonomous staff of professionals in the hospital.

The construction and effective operation of the Mohamed Aden Sheikh Teaching Hospital will create the conditions necessary for the return of health professionals who were forced to flee their own country to avoid its devastation. We believe that the return of an educated and committed medical, nursing and technical class to their country will truly be a new and important point of departure for the peace process in Somalia.
